The hillside cafés in Kasauli where I lost track of time

Some locations make you want to cross things off a list. I wanted to order another cup of coffee because of Kasauli. I had a well-thought-out itinerary when I first arrived. After seeing everything the hill station was known for, visit Monkey Point, take a stroll along Gilbert Trail, visit Christ Church, and depart by evening. When I discovered my first hillside café, that plan gradually changed.

An hour of watching pine trees sway in the breeze, listening to birds instead of traffic, and wondering why I was always in such a hurry while travelling somehow transpired from what I had planned to be a brief tea break. By the time the trip was over, the cafés were as memorable as the scenery.

Every café in Kasauli came with a view

I soon discovered that a lot of cafés in Kasauli take full advantage of their surroundings. Instead of bustling streets, you are often treated to undulating hills, pine-covered slopes, and valleys that seem to go on forever in the distance. When you’re sitting outside with cool mountain air and a view that changes all the time as clouds move across the hills, even something as basic as a cup of tea feels different. It gives the feeling that staying is entirely acceptable.

Coffee was never the main attraction in Kasauli cafes

The drinks were good. The homemade cakes were worth trying. The fresh sandwiches and hot snacks certainly helped. However, if I’m honest, I wasn’t staying because of the menu. I stayed because every table seemed to invite you to slow down. No one seemed to be hurrying through lunch before going somewhere else. People sat staring at the mountains, reading books, or having quiet conversations. After some time, I became aware that I was doing the same thing.

The best conversations happened here

Hill stations have a way of promoting longer conversations. You notice things more when there isn’t the constant background noise of a city. The wind is blowing among the deodar trees. The distant sound of the Kalka-Shimla railway’s whistle now and then. The light shifts as afternoon gradually gives way to evening. Those leisurely conversations, whether I was travelling with friends or just chatting with café owners about life in Kasauli, turned into some of my favourite memories.

Every break somehow lasted longer than planned

“I’ll stop for twenty minutes.” That became my biggest travel lie. One café turned into two. One cup of coffee became another pot of tea. Somehow, one piece of cake made them stay until dusk. Not because I was at a loss for where to go. But because I genuinely didn’t want to leave. Some destinations encourage movement. Kasauli encourages stopping for a while. I had chosen one of the hotels in Kasauli that was close to the centre where most of the cafes were. That made the lingering part easier.

Walking between Kasauli cafés was part of the experience

Not every time did the best part show up. It was making progress. Tall pine and cedar trees, ancient stone walls, blooming gardens and sporadic vantage points that compel you to pause for a picture line the roads surrounding Kasauli. Due to the town’s serene surroundings, even quick strolls between cafés became enjoyable. There was never any need to rush. There seemed to be another peaceful area worth discovering around every corner.

Staying near cafes in Kasauli meant I could take my time

I’m happy that I picked one of the hotels in Kasauli near the town centre and its well-known cafés. It meant I wouldn’t have to worry about a long drive back after sunset or constantly check the time. Rather, I could meander through the peaceful streets, pause at any café that caught my attention, and go back to the hotel whenever I felt like it. Sometimes the best travel luxury isn’t a bigger room. It’s having nowhere to rush to.

Final thoughts

Monkey Point, the Gilbert Trail, and its quaint colonial streets are just a few of Kasauli’s well-known attractions. However, for me, the real magic was found in its hillside cafés. Ordinary breaks were transformed into some of the trip’s most memorable moments by the pleasant mountain air, expansive valley views, relaxed conversations, great coffee, and relaxed surroundings.

Sometimes exploring a hill station isn’t the best thing to do. It’s about finding a quiet café, ordering your favourite drink, and letting the mountains decide when it’s time to leave.
