Before leaving on a trip, you need to plan your passport application carefully. Indeed, the administrative procedure can take a long time in France. Making an appointment, pre-application, supporting documents to provide, cost of the tax stamp, deadlines… Here is everything you need to know about applying for a passport.
How to get a passport?
Obtaining a passport involves making an appointment at a town hall.
To save time, it is possible to make a pre-request for a passport online in advance, even for a first request.
Make a pre-request online on the ANTS website
For practical reasons, it is now possible and even recommended to pre-apply for a passport online.
Simply log in or create an account with your FranceConnect credentials on the ANTS website, then provide the following information:
Reason for pre-request.
Marital status.
Nationality.
Address and contact information.
You will then have to pay the amount of the title and validate the pre-request.
Make an appointment and go to the town hall
To validate your pre-application and thus obtain your passport, you must make an appointment at the town hall, via the ANTS website .
At the end of the pre-application, the applicant obtains a pre-application number and/or a QR Code which they will need to present when visiting the town hall.
A town hall with a system for biometric passports
The choice of the town hall does not depend on the applicant’s place of residence. It may, however, be subject to the town hall’s passport registration capacities.
Not all town halls yet have a collection system (DR) enabling them to respond to requests for biometric passports.
Contact the department dedicated to identity documents
In the vast majority of town halls in France, there is an administrative service dedicated to the formalities of applying for identity documents (passport, but also national identity card).
This is the department you should contact to apply for a passport.
What documents do I need to provide for a passport application?

Any passport application must be accompanied by the following documents, in their original version:
A valid national identity card (or one that has expired less than five years ago).
